9/3/2020 - 1. Gotta work backwards here and start at the end. Goodness gracious the last 3:00 of that game are likely to haunt me for awhile. The only counter to that would be that Rockets fans would have been able to say the exact same thing. You don’t often see a game where BOTH teams and ALL players choke down the stretch at the same time. That was nuts. Pure chaos. The effort was phenomenal by both teams, but the execution was dreadful. SO many chances for the Thunder. What was maddening was that it was EXACTLY what we wanted. That was our game. That’s how we’ve been winning all year long and that’s how we won the three games in this series. There weren’t many games this year where the Thunder were in control start to finish. They either kept it tight all game or scrambled from behind. One thing was consistent: when it got tight late, the Thunder closed. And they did it behind the brilliance of CP3. Tonight, the magic just went poof. Just like that. Midway through the fourth quarter Collapse

8/23/2020 - 1. Well, lots to unpack here. In terms of game analysis there is a lot to cover; these types of games make basketball geeks pretty happy. But I’ll start with something a little more personal and fan-related. I made an ass of myself for the first time in almost half a year tonight. I should probably clarify that: I made an ass of myself for the first time in almost half a year tonight as it relates to watching sports. There, that should make my wife happy (I actually almost started a fire in our backyard today so I have a feeling she might take issue with the general “made an ass of something” analysis without the qualifier). It started when Jeff Green hit a three with about 4:00 remaining to put the Rockets up by two. I took both of my hands and just slap them down hard on my knees. I’m wearing shorts so it made a pretty loud clapping sound (and also kinda hurt). Then, I pouted for a couple of possessions. Then I resigned myself to the loss when we were down five. Then, after Collapse

8/13/2020 - 1. Thunder decided to take this game halfway seriously. I’m not a huge fan of half measures though. I understand it meant very little in the grand scheme and I understand the goal was likely to get the key players one last good sweat before next week. But I didn’t like the spotty defense at all. Our starters also struggled in the third quarter after Miami had gone to their bench. It was good that the team battled back from the early hole to keep it close at the half, but I don’t think the starters gained much of anything tonight other than perhaps a high-level practice. I also doubt it cost them much of anything either (hoping Dort injury isn’t significant). Adams looked a little disinterested which is a tad troubling because we know that’s not who he is. Hoping he just decided tonight would be a coast-night to make sure he was feeling good as opposed to being a sign that his most recent ailment is going to hamper him. We’ve also seen enough now to realize how important Dennis is to Collapse

3/9/2020 - 1. For those of you who dabble in Twitter, Rex Chapman is a must-follow. While he is a former player and current analyst, his feed has very little to do with anything related to basketball. His “block or charge” tweets are gold and he also posts some random funny/uplifting videos. One of his other angles is about dogs. He is clearly a dog lover and enjoys posting videos showing dogs doing amazing/funny things. His text on all of these tweets is simply, “Dogs, bruh.” And when I watch the Thunder this year, sometimes all I can think to say is “this team, bruh.” So that’s how I communicate in game to my friends who are also fellow fans. I’ve sort of run out of words. So it’s often just “this team, bruh.” Of all the wild things about this season, the most wild to me is that since their 0-6 start on the road, the Thunder are 20-5 away from The Peake. Let me repeat that: the Thunder have won 20 of their last 25 road games. What? That’s stupid. That’s the kind of stuff elite/title Collapse

3/4/2020 - 1. Oh, this was not a good night of basketball in Oklahoma. I’ve mentioned on multiple occasions that in addition to my Thunder obsession, I’m also a pretty big fan of OU hoops (my lucky wife). Thunder are my priority unless it’s Tournament time, but I rarely miss an OU game whether it be in person, live, or on delay/DVR. I was looking forward to tonight... big Thunder game and a pivotal game for the Sooners at home vs Texas. On a night like tonight it makes it less painful to give up my Thunder tickets. So here’s how the night goes: My wife puts the three year old to bed while I work on getting the pre-bedtime routine completed for the 11 and 8 year old. I put the Thunder game on pause right at the beginning and set the DVR to record OU. Things actually go pretty smoothly and I’m able to sit down to start the Thunder game at 7:28pm. I watch, zip through commercials and stoppages and catch up to live action right around 8pm/halftime. This allows me to actually watch the first 15 Collapse

2/26/2020 - 1. I should probably feel sorry for Bulls fans, but I don’t. My dislike for that franchise has some pretty organic roots: It’s the late 1980’s, I’m a kid starting to really get into the NBA and I’m living in a non-NBA city (Tulsa). Like most cities in that same situation at that time, kids were gravitating to the Bulls because of MJ. This was also long before NBA League Pass and WGN still carried lots of Bulls games nationally. So if you didn’t have a team in your backyard, the Bulls were it. But not for me. Guess I’ve always had a few contrarian tendencies and it seemed sort of lame to just jump on the MJ train like everyone else. So I got cute. The Cleveland Cavaliers were the closest team to the Bulls in the standings at the time, so I chose them. I figured, not only will I not ROOT for the Bulls, I will specifically OPPOSE them. Boy, sometimes seemingly innocent decisions have painful consequences. From approximately 1988-1993 the Cavs were good. They were REALLY good in 1992. Collapse

2/14/2020 - 1. This was such a fitting way to end the first half of the season for the Thunder. They more or less did tonight what they’ve been doing all year. What stands out to me the most was that there was a moment where it looked like “uh, oh this won’t end well...” and yet, it ended quite well. You can apply that to this game as well as the first half of this season. I didn’t have very high hopes for this game. As stated in the previous blog entry, the four game home stand prior to tonight was a slog. They managed to go 2-2, but they did not look very good. Looked tired, a step slow. Missing that extra gear they’ve shown all season. I thought the most likely outcome was for that to carry over to this road game against a hot team. I honestly was half expecting a blowout loss. I probably should have know better. This was a “mature” win. Not to make the Pelicans out to be a juggernaut or anything, especially without their leading scorer, but they have been playing very well and Zion is Collapse

2/8/2020 - 1. When it comes to customer service, public relations, social media, etc. the Thunder are not only at the very top of the NBA, they are at the top, period. They exude class and they always strike the right tone. Like most NBA teams, they throw out a number of corny promos and turnout antics, but they generally have the sense to scrap something if it’s TOO corny or annoying. I run a business myself and I often take notes from the Thunder; I think they do an excellent job of living the “they are no small things” philosophy. I say all this to express my bewilderment that in over a decade now they haven’t been able to find the right mix for their intro videos/song. The little “My City” video that plays prior to intros is fine, that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m referring to the approx 60 second intro prior to the player introductions. Since the beginning they’ve rotated video clips running concurrent with various generic techno-ish background music. It generally misses the mark. Collapse

1/30/2020 - 1. It goes without saying (I hope) that I am a massive Thunder/NBA fan. In addition to attending and/or watching all of the games; I also absorb a lot of other basketball-related content throughout each week and I talk about it A LOT (just ask my wife). I follow every NBA/Thunder media type as well as many Thunder fan accounts. I post on a message board. I listen to podcasts. I’d say I’m as “all in” as it gets. Yet somehow, someway I completely missed the small trade the team made earlier in the week. At the game Monday I saw a face on the bench I did not recognize. Distracted by the events that night I totally forgot to look it up. Then tonight I see this dude again; and I’m like, “wait, what? who the hell is that dude?” So I finally do a google search and learn that we apparently made a trade cloaked in secrecy— that or total lack of interest. Thunder traded Justin Patton to Dallas for Isaiah Roby. Summary I suppose is that Dallas needed a roster spot to replace an injured player. Collapse

9/1/2020 - 1. Interesting times. Perhaps “interesting” is far too positive of a word. But I like to see myself as a generally positive person so I’ll leave it at as interesting. It is unrealistic to think that in times like this we can keep social and political issues out of any area or any arena. Sports included. Humans play these games, run these leagues, and broadcast these events. In the specific case of the NBA, the league is predominantly comprised of young African American men. I know many want an “escape” when they watch sports. I do too. But there is no way to fully escape reality right now. And in the case of the players, many feel if they don’t use the platform they have as a tool to speak up that it will be a waste of what they’ve been given, perhaps even irresponsible. I believe the intentions of the players is good. And I very much believe they feel deeply on this and it isn’t an act. I am not offended by players having a voice. I am not offended by any of it really. I do Collapse

8/21/2020 - 1. I’m often wrong about sports. But I’m honestly not very often truly surprised. Perhaps that’s what a lifetime of watching games religiously does; call it instinct or cynicism or experience, but I’m not often legit surprised by outcomes. Now, I’m not saying an individual game result hasn’t left me shocked— that happens a lot. I’m talking about deeper outcomes. This series would fall into that category. I thought it was a 50/50 series and I picked the Thunder in 7. So the fact that we could lose the series isn’t surprising to me in the least. What DOES surprise me is how inferior we’ve looked in pretty much all facets of both games. I knew something wasn’t right after game one. It didn’t feel like a fluke. It didn’t feel like just round 1 of a heavyweight bout. It felt like trouble. The fact that the Thunder were able to only make minor successful adjustments in Game 2 leads me to believe its DEEP trouble now. OKC looks flummoxed. At the end of the game tonight there was a Collapse

8/11/2020 - 1. First quarter was cool. I should probably just stop there. I’m not shocked at this point by any level of “load management” implemented league-wide, but I will say I’m a bit surprised that after a five month hiatus that so many teams seem to have taken a “meh” approach to the seeding games. Now, truth be told I suppose in actuality very little was on the line for the teams other than the West teams battling for the play-in game. And those teams haven’t subscribed to any load management. Entering the bubble the Thunder had a slim shot at the 2/3 seed, but any hope of that went out the window with the loss to Denver. At that point it became clear it would be the 4-6 seed and without home court on the line, it becomes all about match ups. My impression is that the Thunder either don’t really have a preference of who they play or don’t feel they have any real control over it, so might as well be cautious and let the chips fall where they may. They didn’t plan on Adams Collapse

3/7/2020 - 1. Not gonna lie, was pretty distracted during this one with the virus-mania going on. Striking the right balance between being informed, aware, and diligent versus making sure you don’t contribute to unnecessary panic or shutdowns is difficult. Four weeks ago I was blowing this off as typical over-hype. Now, I fear I’ve swung the other direction and might be getting overly freaked out by the over-hype. I’m not so much freaked out by the virus as I am freaked out by the freak out. This is definitely a tricky situation for everyone to navigate. No need to dive deeper here into the social, economic, and political impacts of this so I’ll stick with what I know— basketball. NBA sent a memo to teams today telling them to identify “essential staff” and be prepared to play games in empty arenas if it comes to that. I have no problem with them getting this info out and I also think it would be an OK plan on two conditions. First, the games would have to be broadcast as the normally would. If Collapse

2/29/2020 - 1. This was actually a little bit cleansing. The Thunder have played a LOT of close games. They’ve been exceptionally good in said games. And truth be told, they’ve been on the right side of the luck coin more often than not this year. The schedule has generally been favorable, they’ve caught some teams missing key players, they’ve gotten the benefit of some 50/50 calls, etc. All around it’s just sort of been “their year” in many ways. Well, tonight, was most definitely NOT “their night.” Thunder have been impressive all season long on the second night of back to backs and at the end of tough stretches. It was probably bound to catch up to them eventually. They played a nail-biter last night where they had to expend a lot of energy to get the win. This was also their third game in four nights. Gallo resting. Milwaukee had not played since Tuesday. And, oh by the way, Milwaukee is AWESOME. So this one was set up as poorly as it could possibly be set up for the upset. Bucks took the Collapse

2/24/2020 - 1. Lots of happy thoughts tonight, but the one thing that stuck out to me above all else was how the Thunder and Steven Adams himself need to do whatever they need to do to ensure the version we are seeing right now is the version that is ready once the playoffs arrive. It appears clear that the All Star Break did wonders for me. Hard to know if it’s mental, physical, or both, but whatever it is, there is a noticeable difference. He was borderline showboating tonight at one point. Moving effortlessly and just gobbling up rebounds and finishing strong. So that tells me he clearly was NOT “injured” before the break. If he had a bum knee or something that wouldn’t just magically heal over the course of a week. This tells me he was likely just beat up and worn out. I also think it’s possible he sort of picks his spots throughout the season. Whatever the case may be, there needs to be a concerted effort to bottle this and unleash it in the post-season. If that means he needs to “load Collapse

2/12/2020 - 1. Welcome to the first rut of the season. Even though they started 6-11, I thought they actually played well over those first 15 games and just had a little trouble getting the offense into a flow and closing out game. They fixed both of those items and then proceeded to play extremely well (and consistently) for two and a half months. They were rewarded with four full days off and then a four game home stand. Well, said stand was kind of a dud. They did not look good over these four games. If I were to assign a grade to each it would look like this: Cavs (C); Pistons (C-); Celtics (B); Spurs (D+). Average that out and you’re looking at a solid “C” home stand. Bring your C game in the NBA and you should probably feel fortunate to come out of it at 2-2. The pace has been off over these games as has been their shooting. Also a step slow on the boards, loose balls, etc. A classic rut. I’m not sweating it. At all. Because all teams (save the truly elite) go through these. It’s mid Collapse

2/6/2020 - 1. First of all, I have something totally random and off topic to say: parents out there who ROOT for schools to be cancelled due to snow are much, much better parents than me. It’s cool for like 90 minutes; then they come inside, total messes of wet and dirty clothes, and you look at the clock and it’s only 10:30am. Cabin fever sets in quick. Thankfully, my kids attend Edmond Public Schools so this was a one-day event for them. Days like this I also think about weird stuff; Cavs in town, team having a miserable season. And if you’ve ever been to Cleveland in the winter (raises hand) it is beyond brutal. Arctic cold, snow, gray. Awful. Just awful. So I think about their players and staff. Gotta figure one silver lining (besides the 7 figure salaries) is that they get breaks from the misery when they travel south and west. So it must be a real bummer to wake up in OKC with several hours to kill and you look outside your window and see... Cleveland. 2. Tonight was fairly predictable. Collapse

8/25/2020 - 1. Much like Game 3, lots to unravel here. But the one thing I learned in journalism school (other than I did not want to be a professional journalist) was not to bury the lead. For me, the “lead” in this game is a bit more murky than usual. The game went down to the wire, but I actually think it was decided (or at least saved) in the third quarter. That onslaught from the Rockets out of halftime was absurd. Not only did they start 8-8 from three, but they scored 17 points in three minutes on 100% shooting. Many of those shots were contested. That is a very hard punch to take and get off the canvas. But while the Rockets were scoring literally every time down the court, CP3 very quietly found his midrange game and kept the Thunder within shouting distance. The game went from tied to Thunder down 13 in an instant. However, CP3 kept it from getting up to 20 and being out of reach. What is so impressive in that situation was his patience and confidence. It’s as if he said Collapse

8/19/2020 - 1. 483 days. That’s how long we waited between Thunder playoff games. The last time we watched them in the post season, Lillard was waving goodbye to the 2019 Thunder season; little did we know he was also essentially waving goodbye to the Thunder as we knew them. It’s been quite the eventful 483 days since that shot— both for the Thunder organization and the world at large. I did, however, find myself in the same exact spot tonight where I sat for that late night game in Portland 483 days ago— on my couch. And I was pretty pumped when the game started. And I got pretty frustrated pretty fast. It was good to experience all of that again. It’s different; it’s a little weird. Like everyone else, I would have preferred this game to be played four months ago in front of 20,000 people. But here we are. I’ve really enjoyed the bubble experience thus far and grateful that there won’t forever be a cloud hanging over this Thunder season wondering what may have happened in the playoffs. Collapse

8/10/2020 - Well, not quite sure where to begin or even HOW to begin. My last blog post was after the thrilling Thunder victory in Boston back in early March. My plan was attend the Utah game, but with my business about to be effective by what was then a POSSIBLE shutdown, I decided to give my tickets away that night. So I was not in the building the night the world stopped turning on its axis. I was watching though. At first I was simply too depressed to write about it. Just crushed as a fan. Then, I started finding it impossible to discuss damn near anything without venturing into politics or social takes. And that is the last thing I ever want this blog to be about. So I just stopped. About two months in I simply stopped visiting all social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Those are also two of my main sources to get the blog out so it just seemed pointless to bother. Once the restart plan was announced I was skeptical. Didn’t want to get my hopes up and wasn’t sure I’d even be Collapse

3/5/2020 - 1. The fact that this game got close doesn’t bug me. I don’t love having my blood pressure raised unnecessarily, but I don’t drawn any deeper meaning from struggling to put away a bad Pistons team. It’s attrition time in the NBA. It’s always a bit of a weird month for the league. Mass fatigue has set in, both physical and mental. March Madness is right around the corner and even with dwindling interest in the college game, it will always own the middle part of the month. For the elite teams like the Lakers and Bucks the trick is staying sharp while also making sure to avoid any physical burnout. The trick for the really bad teams is keeping your players engaged for the next month. For the teams fighting for something in the middle (Thunder’s category) the trick balancing the importance of winning night to night vs making sure you are at your peak once the playoffs begin. It’s a tough balancing act and it’s why you often see some wacky outcomes in March (see the Warriors winning by 16 Collapse

2/28/2020 - 1. I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s hard to forget 35+ years of watching basketball and rely just on what we’ve been witnessing for four months. No matter what, my instincts are always going to be to think “game over” when a team falls behind by 19 points midway through the third quarter. We’ve seen the Thunder erase that (and more) plenty of times just this year. We saw the KD/Russ era Thunder (still weird to talk about that in past tense) plenty of times too. It’s actually been a Thunder speciality over the years. But for every major deficit erased, there are probably 50 or more that don’t get overcome. So, no I didn’t think we were going to win once Sacramento extend to 19. Now, just because my instincts tell me one thing, my brain is just sharp enough to remind me to stick it out. And once we got it down to single digits, I figured they’d finish the job. Instincts are overrated anyway. So I guess no matter how many times they do it, I’ll keep thinking the next mountain is too Collapse

2/22/2020 - 1. Every year I tell myself I’m ready for the All Star break. I know it’s good for the players and even as a fan, taking a step back for a week is probably a healthy thing. But the same thing happens every year: two days in, I’m ready for the games to return. There is just such a rhythm and routine to the season and I don’t like when that routine is altered. It’s especially bad the Monday-Wednesday of the break when there are no All Star festivities or other games being played. Just dead space. I get home from work, go through the dinner/bath/bedtime routine with the kiddos, then sit down on the couch and out of habit switch on ESPN, TNT, NBATV, or FSOK, and...nothing. What do normal people do in these situations? Talk to their families? Read a book? Complete a home repair project? Yuck. Such a relief when the games return and the world starts operating normally again. 2. I think 50 wins is a great goal for this season. The fact that it’s attainable is really remarkable. 2/10/2020 - 1. While neither team was flawless by any stretch, you got the distinct impression today that you were watching two really good NBA teams go at it. Now, I do think that ultimately the better team won. But I don’t think there is a huge margin there. If they arranged a seven game series between the Celtics and Thunder I’m thinking Boston prevails in 7 or a hard fought 6. This is an impressive statement for the Thunder considering I ABSOLUTELY believe Boston is a threat to win the East and wind up in the NBA Finals this year. This was just a really good game. Lots of blows exchanged. Thunder didn’t do a good enough job on the boards and they also missed far too many looks around the rim. The difference today was slim. For the first time in quite awhile OKC played a tight game where their opponent just made a few more plays in the clutch than they did. I know some people are a bit concerned with the fact that OKC is just 2-6 since Jan 1st against good/playoff teams. Doesn’t bother me Collapse

2/1/2020 - 1. First, a little news from parent corner: There are a lot of things about raising kids that are difficult, frustrating, stressful, scary, etc. But there’s some good stuff too. One of the best things is when you see little glimpses of all your brainwashing paying off. My oldest daughter turns 11 tomorrow. A few years ago, the Thunder played on her birthday. It was a weeknight game against the Bulls and it was an 8:30pm start for National TV. But it was her birthday, so we went. Well, the Thunder got steamrolled that night. Bulls killed them. My daughter was borderline offended that this could happen on her birthday and she has held a grudge against the Bulls ever since (I like this about kids too, because as an adult you’d hold the grudge against the Thunder). So every year when the schedule is released she checks to see if they play on her birthday in her search for redemption. The game tonight in Phoenix was as close as it gets this year. She asked to go. Her mother and I politely Collapse
